Frequently asked questions:
Q. What do I wear?
A. The most important thing in selecting an outfit is that you like it! If you like an outfit, it’s probably because you look good in it – those are the ones you want to bring! You’ll want some variety – some casual and some dressy outfits. Dark outfits with some design to them can make excellent black & white images. Jeans and jean jackets make an excellent choice too! Avoid sleeveless and very short sleeved shirts or dresses – upper arms can be distracting in photographs. Busy patterns can be distracting too. Don’t forget that your shoes will show, they need to compliment your clothing so you may need more than one pair. Of course my personal preference would be barefoot poses!
Guys will need at least one outfit for a traditional portrait. A suit or sports coat, dress shirt and tie always work well. Medium or dark sweaters are a good alternative to the traditional suit & tie look. For casual clothes stick with those you like – jeans or shorts, sweatshirts or casual shirts are great.
Girls will need one or more dressy outfits (dresses, sweaters, and lace) for a traditional portrait. Bright colors, skirts, jeans and shorts for your more casual poses. If you have light hair an all white outfit can make a stunning high-key effect. All black always work well and can help to slenderize your image.
Q. Should I bring anything with me?
A. Yes! This can be the most fun of your portrait session! I work hard to bring out your personality and what makes you unique! Be sure to bring your favorite items! Hats, pets, sunglasses, instruments, letter jackets, class rings, awards & trophies, uniforms, sports equipment, stuffed animals, cars or bikes, boom boxes, CD collections – whatever best expresses who YOU really are! Fresh flowers for girls are always a great idea! I am excited about new ideas…if you think of something you want to do we will try it!
Q. Can I bring someone with me?
A. Sure! Some seniors feel more comfortable with a friend, parent or sibling to help ease the camera jitters. Others find it distracting to have family members or friends in the room. The decision is YOURS!
Q. What about tanning before my session?
A. A base tan can look great in your portraits but don’t overdo it! Too much sun can darken your skin unnaturally, it can dry out your hair and make your skin seems shiny & greasy. It can even show bags under your eyes! Strap marks can be a problem with bare shoulder poses, so if you feel you need to tan…keep your tan even. Sunburn is a real problem – if you are burned you will need to reschedule your appointment.
Q. What about makeup?
A. Don’t overdo it - you want to look natural for your portraits! If you aren’t familiar with makeup techniques or you just want to pamper yourself there are several businesses that will do makeovers free of charge, let them do the work for you! Be sure to bring your makeup with your for a quick touch up, especially if you wear lip gloss as it can wear off quickly. If you have any noticeable blemishes you may want to use some cover-up. Stand about 2 feet in front of a mirror, dab a small amount on each blemish. If they are gone in the mirror, they’ll be gone in your photos too! Guys, this works for you as well! Image enhancement can also be done to remove minor blemishes so don’t worry if you have an outbreak that isn’t easily hidden!
Q. Any advice on hair?
A. Try to have your hair cut and/or permed at least one week prior to your appointment. This will give it time to fill in and look more natural than if it were freshly cut. Don’t try a radically different style on your scheduled day - you want your portraits to express the “real” you! Be sure to bring your styling equipment with you so you can make adjustments or style changes during your session.
Q. I wear glasses, what about the glare?
A. If you wear glasses most of the time, you will still want to wear them in your portraits. The best way to eliminate glare and reflections is to contact your optician and arrange to borrow a pair of empty frames like yours. You can also have the lenses removed from your own glasses. Most opticians will be happy to do this for free, but do be sure to contact them ahead of time. This is the best way to totally eliminate glare & distortion and make sure your pictures look great!
Q. What if it rains?
A. If you scheduled an indoor/outdoor photo session please arrive at the appointment time. It might be raining where you are but sunny here! Often rain showers come & go and we can still shoot outdoors when the indoor portion of your session is complete. If the weather continues not to cooperate it is still easier to reschedule just the outdoor portion of a session, when needed, than to reschedule the entire session. If the entire shoot was to be outdoor or on location, please contact the studio one hour before your session time. We will determine at that time if the weather and our schedules will allow us to delay the shoot for the same day or if we will need to reschedule.
Q. When can I see my proofs?
A. Electronic (In-Studio) previews and online proofing are usually available within 10 working days, often sooner. If you request lab prints of your proofs they are generally available in about 2 to 3 weeks.
Q. Anything else I need to know?
A. Your session is supposed to be FUN! Don’t stress over the outcome of your photos, just relax & enjoy yourself. Try to allow plenty of time to prepare before your appointment, you’ll feel better if you don’t have to rush to get there on time! Wearing your first outfit to the session will save time too! If your session has not been pre-paid you will need to bring the session fee with you, along with any coupons that you may have. Cash, checks and credit cards are all accepted.
I want you to be comfortable so we can get the best portraits of your life! If you have any questions or you’re unsure of anything before or during your session, please ask me! I look forward to working with you soon!
